ASMCF-SSFH Postgraduate Study Day: practical information

Lori Lee Oates has put together some practical information to assist those attending the Postgraduate Study Day on 7 March. Don’t forget to register here by 27 February!

The Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France (ASMCF) and Society for the Study of French History (SSFH) are pleased to welcome speakers and delegates to the University of Exeter on March 7, 2015. Below is some information to make your travel experience a little easier.

Places to Stay

 Airlines

Flybe flies direct to and from Charles de Gaulle Airport and a variety of cities within the United Kingdom. It cost approximately £13 to take a taxi to and from the airport into the city. A bus service is also available from the airport to Exeter St. David’s train station. There is a desk to arrange taxis at the airport.

Easyjet flies direct from Charles de Gaulle, and other French cities (Nice and Toulouse) to Bristol. There is a bus service available from the airport to Bristol Temple Meads train station. The train ride from Bristol to Exeter is approximately one hour. It costs approximately £35 to travel from Bristol Airport to Exeter, and an airport bus-train ticket combination can be booked on rail web sites.

 Train Stations

Exeter is serviced by two train stations, both of which are within walking distance of the university and city centre. Trains from the Midlands, Bristol, the North, and London Paddington arrive at Exeter St. David’s. You can also travel from London Waterloo to Exeter Central. If you are travelling from Oxford, it is best to go through Reading. There is a taxi queue at St. David’s station.

Participants are encouraged to pre-book train and airline tickets to secure the best prices. Train fares can often be reduced by splitting tickets.

 Pubs

The following pubs are recommended:

  • The Rusty Bike (dinner reservations required for weekends) – £££, 20 minutes from campus
  • The Victoria Inn – ££, 20 minutes from campus
  • The Ram – £, On campus
  • The Imperial (Wetherspoons)- £, 10 minutes from campus
  • The Ship Inn – ££, 30 minutes from campus, off High Street

There will be a social at the Imperial on Saturday night after the conclusion of papers.

 Cafés

There are Costa coffeehouses on campus, near Exeter St. David’s train station, and on each end of the High Street. There is a Starbucks on the High Street. There is also an Artigiano Coffee and Wine Bar on the High Street. Devon Coffee and the Boston Tea Party (near High Street) are independently owned local shops.
